Rishi Sunak's Political Maneuvers: Navigating Rebellion and Humiliation

UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak is attempting to appease disgruntled Tory MPs to prevent a rebellion over his Rwanda deportation plan, which has cost £290 million. The emergency bill, which designates Rwanda as a safe place to deport asylum seekers, has faced criticism from both the left and right of the Conservative Party. The cost of the plan has more than doubled, with the government providing an additional £100 million to Rwanda. A crucial vote on the bill next Tuesday could determine Sunak's future as Prime Minister, with just 29 rebel Tories needed to defeat the government.

"UK MPs Face Pressure to Support Rishi Sunak's Controversial Rwanda Plan"

Tory MPs are facing pressure from ministers to support Rishi Sunak's plan to send migrants to Rwanda for processing and potential resettlement in order to deter Channel crossings. The government has introduced emergency legislation, the Safety of Rwanda Bill, which requires judges to treat Rwanda as safe and grants ministers powers to disregard parts of the Human Rights Act. Some MPs have concerns about the approach and will examine the bill, with debates scheduled for Tuesday. While MPs with human rights concerns are being assured that some protections remain, those on the right of the party are being reassured that legal challenges would be unlikely to succeed. Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman and former immigration minister Robert Jenrick have criticized the plan, with Jenrick arguing that the bill does not go far enough.
