
Malian Islamist Police Chief Sentenced to 10 Years for War Crimes
The International Criminal Court has sentenced al-Hassan ag Abdoul Aziz ag Mohamed ag Mahmoud, former head of the Islamic police in Timbuktu, to 10 years in prison for war crimes, including torture and overseeing public amputations. He was acquitted of charges related to rape and sexual slavery. The court acknowledged the significant harm caused to victims during his "reign of terror" under the al-Qaeda-linked Ansar Dine group. Hassan has 30 days to appeal the judgment, and reparations for victims will be addressed later.
