Caster Semenya triumphs in appeal against discriminatory testosterone limit
Caster Semenya, the South African Olympic champion runner, has won her appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against the "discriminatory" testosterone limits imposed on female athletes by World Athletics. The ECHR ruled that the regulations violated the prohibition of discrimination and the right to respect for private life. Semenya, who has naturally high levels of testosterone, would have been required to take medication to reduce her hormone levels in order to compete internationally. She was unable to defend her 800m crown in the Tokyo Olympics due to the rules. World Athletics plans to seek referral of the case to the ECHR Grand Chamber, while the current regulations remain in place.
