Unveiling the Displacement of San Francisco's Homeless During APEC 2023
As the APEC conference took place in San Francisco, the city made efforts to relocate and offer shelter to its homeless population in order to present a cleaner image. Many homeless individuals were moved from areas near the conference venue to other parts of the city, such as Willow Street and the Tenderloin district. The St. Anthony's organization reported an increase in the need for shelter in the Tenderloin during this time. While businesses in the area appreciate the temporary relief, concerns remain about what will happen to the homeless population once the conference concludes. The city's Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing stated that dedicated outreach efforts were focused on the conference vicinity, and they opened additional winter shelter capacity, adding 300 beds to the system.
