I-95 Reopens with Temporary Lanes After Bridge Collapse.

Six temporary lanes have been opened on the portion of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia that collapsed just under two weeks ago due to a fatal tanker fire. The lanes were built much faster than officials originally predicted, and a new timeline will begin for the permanent structure after traffic is moving again over the temporary overpass. The estimated cost for this project is between $25 million and $30 million, with the federal government pledging to cover a majority, if not all, of the cost.

I-95 set to reopen in 2 weeks after repairs.

Crews are working 24/7 to reopen at least a temporary part of I-95 in Philadelphia within two weeks after its collapse. Drivers have mixed feelings about the temporary roadway, with some looking forward to the reopening while others plan to avoid the interstate until a permanent bridge is complete. Michael Chajes, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Delaware, assures that the temporary lanes will be "completely safe" to drive on once they're ready to go. PennDOT notes that the temporary fix of filling in the roadway with recycled glass aggregate will be done "within the next day or two."

Crews have been working 24/7 since to repair the broken highway, and officials said crews will continue to work through the holiday weekend to get things reopened. Commuters will have to continue making adjustments to their daily routes for a while longer.

I-95 Reconstruction Progress and Updates.

PennDOT has released renderings of the temporary lanes that will be built to get traffic flowing through the area again after the I-95 bridge collapse in Philadelphia. The plan is to reopen a portion of the highway once crews build three temporary north and southbound lanes. The materials needed to do the job are now in place, and the most time-consuming work will be framing out the retaining walls. Once those lanes are in place and open to traffic, crews will then start to build a permanent bridge from the outside in.
