Coastal Hazards: Jones Beach and Local Beaches Impacted by High Tide Floods and Rip Currents
Jones Beach, along with other area beaches, has been closed for swimming due to high surf, hazardous rip currents, and flooding caused by tropical systems and the super moon. The flooding has affected several areas of the beach, with water rising up to a foot in some spots. Lifeguards have cordoned off the floodwaters, allowing beachgoers to stay on small patches of sand. Officials plan to use a bulldozer to build trenches to redirect the water back into the Atlantic, with hopes of reopening the beach by Friday and for the Labor Day weekend.
