"DeSantis Welcomes Evacuated Americans, Criticizes Gaza Coverage and Refugee Acceptance"

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his wife welcomed nearly 300 Americans who were evacuated from Israel due to the Israel-Hamas war. The flight landed at Tampa International Airport, and additional evacuees landed in Orlando. DeSantis provided resources and supplies to the evacuees and pledged to send aid to Israel. The rescue operation was facilitated by the non-profit organization Project DYNAMO. Major airlines had canceled flights in and out of Tel Aviv after the attack, and the U.S. State Department received requests for departure assistance from over 20,000 U.S. citizens in Israel and Gaza. While some Israeli airlines are still operating flights, U.S. carriers have canceled hundreds of flights until the end of the month. Other countries, such as Poland and Spain, have already evacuated some of their citizens, leading some lawmakers to call for the U.S. administration to do the same. The U.S. State Department is in touch with American citizens in Israel and exploring various options to assist those who want to leave, including contract options by air, land, and sea to nearby countries. However, military evacuation options are typically a last resort due to cost considerations.
