Spanish Police Recover $64 Million Worth of Ancient Gold Jewelry Stolen from Ukraine

Spain has seized ancient gold jewellery worth $63.6 million that was stolen from Ukraine, after thieves were caught attempting to sell the artefacts in Madrid. The 11 pieces, including necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, date back to the Greco-Scythian period between the 8th and 4th centuries BC. The items were smuggled out of Ukraine in 2016 and had forged documents claiming they belonged to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Three Spanish and two Ukrainian nationals were arrested in connection with the investigation.

British Museum's Plea for Public Assistance in Recovering Stolen Artefacts

The British Museum has appealed to the public and experts for help in identifying and recovering ancient artefacts that have gone missing from its collection. Last month, around 2,000 treasures were reported missing, stolen, or damaged, leading to a staff member being sacked and a police investigation. The museum has shared pictures of similar items, most of which are Greek and Roman gems and jewellery, and has already seen 60 objects returned. In an effort to recover the remaining items, the museum has provided details and images on its website and is working with an international panel of experts. An independent review of the museum's security has also been launched.

"British Museum Implements Emergency Security Measures Amidst Alleged Theft of Priceless Artefacts"

The British Museum has implemented emergency security measures and launched an independent review after admitting that a staff member has stolen a number of priceless artefacts from its collection. The stolen pieces, including gold jewellery and gems dating back to the 15th century BC, are now considered missing, stolen, and damaged. The museum is coordinating with the police and plans to pursue legal action against the dismissed staff member. The review will be led by former trustee Nigel Boardman and Chief Constable Lucy D'Orsi, with the aim of recovering the missing items and making recommendations for future security arrangements.

"US Repatriates Vast Collection of Stolen Artefacts to Italy"

The United States has returned over 250 ancient artefacts to Italy after it was discovered that they had been stolen and sold to US museums and private collectors in the 1990s. The items, including pots, paintings, and sculptures dating back thousands of years, were found to have been looted and were worth millions of euros. The artefacts originated from various ancient civilizations, such as the Villanovan age, Etruscan civilization, Magna Graecia, and Imperial Rome. Italy has been actively seeking to recover stolen antiques and artefacts, and this recent return follows a similar repatriation of stolen art from New York in September 2022.
