Sentences Handed Down for Capitol Rioters, Including Trump Appointee

Steven Cappuccio, a Jan. 6 rioter who violently attacked Officer Daniel Hodges by ripping at his gas mask during the Capitol attack, has been sentenced to over seven years in federal prison. The government had sought a longer sentence, emphasizing the "sadistic cruelty" of Cappuccio's actions. Cappuccio, who claimed PTSD as a factor, was criticized by Hodges, also a veteran, who questioned the timing of Cappuccio's mental health claim. Cappuccio's co-defendant, Federico Klein, a Trump appointee, was also sentenced to nearly six years for assaulting officers in the same tunnel. Over 1,100 defendants have been arrested in connection with the Capitol attack, with more than 400 already sentenced.
