York City Police are giving away steering wheel locks to owners of Hyundais and Kias after a rash of car thefts in the city involving specific models. The locks were provided by Hyundai and will prevent the cars from being driven away. Police held a free distribution event and advised those who couldn't attend to check with the city for extras.
The Lincoln Police Department is offering free steering wheel locks to Hyundai and Kia owners in response to the "Kia Boyz" TikTok challenge, which has inspired teens to steal cars across the country. LPD blamed the "Kia Boyz" for a rash of vehicle thefts last summer. The locks are available on a first-come, first-served basis at three LPD stations in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Hyundai and Kia will distribute free steering wheel locks to owners of affected models in response to thefts that were popularized on TikTok. The locks will be given away in addition to an upcoming update to anti-theft software in 3 million Hyundai and Kia models. The software upgrade is free, and so are the steering wheel locks. The thefts may have been “encouraged” by social media, but there’s no getting around the lack of immobilizers in affected models.
