City crews and homeowners battled the invasion with rakes and shovels before heavy equipment was called in to clear the onslaught. The city put out dumpsters to clear the tumbleweeds, and the National Weather Service reported hurricane-force wind gusts in the area. Tumbleweeds, associated with the Desert West, come from the Russian thistle plant and spread seeds as they travel.
