"Shaping the Conversation: Genetic Disorder Carriers' Perspectives on Genome Editing"

A qualitative study conducted in the Netherlands explored the perspectives of carriers of an autosomal dominant genetic disorder on somatic genome editing (SGE) and human genome editing (HGE). The study found that participants had varied views on the benefits of SGE and HGE, with most being positive towards HGE for severe genetic conditions. Some participants had religious objections to HGE, while others saw it as a gift from God to alleviate suffering. The study highlighted the importance of providing factual information about genome editing to help participants make informed decisions. The results also raised the issue of contextual factors, such as access to healthcare, influencing participants' views. The authors recommended embracing the ambivalent views of genetic disorder carriers when engaging with the public and stakeholders.
