DeSantis Blames Liberal Crime Policies for Maine Mass Shooting

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis blamed "liberal, soft on crime policies" for the recent mass shooting in Maine that left 18 people dead. DeSantis argued that individuals who commit violent crimes often cycle in and out of the justice system due to lenient policies. Meanwhile, Democrats, including Maine Representative Jared Golden, called for gun regulation in response to the shooting, with Golden pledging to pursue a ban on assault rifles. The suspect, Robert Card, remains at large, and a search is ongoing.

US cities see significant rise in crime rates.

A study by WalletHub has found that murder rates in major US cities have risen by over 10% in the past two years, with most homicides occurring in Democrat-led areas with soft-on-crime policies. The study compared the rise in murder rates in 45 of the country's most populated cities between 2021 and 2023 and found that killings were rising faster in Democrat-led cities than in their Republican counterparts. The researchers theorized that social movements such as the public unrest to the killing of George Floyd and progressive policies such as defending the police and implementing no-cash bail have exacerbated the issue. The homicide clearance rate has been steadily declining since the 1960s but suffered an alarming drop during the pandemic.

Calls for Change in San Francisco After Fatal Stabbing and Retail Theft Charges.

Activist Ricci Wynne called on California Gov. Gavin Newsom and San Francisco Mayor London Breed to enact stricter policies to keep Californians safe after a tech executive was fatally stabbed in downtown San Francisco. Wynne argued that soft-on-crime policies are causing criminals to "push the envelope" on what they can get away with and until the policies are repealed, they will continue to push the limit. He also criticized the city's drug scene and called for change. Mayor Breed had previously asked for federal assistance to help mitigate the city's crime crisis.
