Japan Redefines Sexual Consent and Rape Laws
Japan has raised the age of consent from 13 to 16 and broadened the definition of rape from "forcible sexual intercourse" to "non-consensual sexual intercourse." The expanded definition includes acts committed using drugging and intoxication and criminalizes the grooming of minors. The changes also include a crackdown on "photo voyeurism" and secretly filming sexual acts. The move comes after a string of defendants charged with sexual crimes were acquitted, leading to the Flower Demo movement demanding changes to sex crime laws.
