Affirm Holdings saw a 15% increase in its stock price as it expanded its buy now, pay later (BNPL) relationship with Walmart. The BNPL option will now be available to shoppers using Walmart's self-checkout kiosks, in addition to being offered online and at Walmart Vision and Auto Centers. Research conducted by Affirm indicated that a majority of customers wanted the BNPL choice at checkout.
Kohl's is revising its store layouts to focus more on home goods and relocate home décor and "gifts" to the front of the store. The company will expand inventory in wall art, seasonal, patio furniture, camping, and outdoor gear, and will condense its checkout lanes to just one area. Kohl's will pursue a more modern look with a cleaner and brighter appearance, and 250 stores will now get self-checkout kiosks.
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy criticized the self-checkout tipping trend, claiming that he is "deathly afraid" of being labeled a "cheapskate" for not leaving a tip. The new feature prompts consumers with a tipping questionnaire at the end of a self-checkout purchase, despite facing minimal to no interaction with any employee. Portnoy also spoke out against people who talk on speakerphone in public, calling it a societal "violation."
