Heatwave Forces School Closures in Multiple U.S. Cities
Grand Rapids Public Schools closed all school buildings on Thursday, June 1, and Friday, June 2, due to extreme heat. Eight school buildings in the district currently don’t have air conditioning systems, prompting complaints about the extreme heat from students and teachers. The district plans to address air conditioning and classroom comfort under the upcoming $305 million bond proposal, which would be dedicated to improving facilities and providing a better learning environment. The district decided to close all buildings across the district to avoid any confusion or frustration among families. The district is planning to bring students back to school on Monday, June 5 because temperatures are expected to cool down.
