MLS Excludes Teams from U.S. Open Cup, Sparks Controversy in American Soccer
Major League Soccer (MLS) announced that its clubs will skip the U.S. Open Cup for the first time in the league's history, with teams instead entering their affiliates from the MLS Next Pro development league. The decision aims to provide emerging professional players with more opportunities for meaningful competition and reduce schedule congestion. MLS plans to reevaluate its approach to the Open Cup next season. The move comes as MLS teams face increasing domestic and international obligations, including participation in the Leagues Cup and Concacaf Champions Cup.
