Hormuz Blockade Slows Global Oil Traffic as Ships Gather and Diversions Rise
Iran’s de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has sharply reduced global oil movement, with only about 21 tankers transiting since Feb. 28 as hundreds of ships wait or divert to alternative ports. Roughly 400 vessels linger in the Gulf of Oman, while others reroute to Fujairah, Khor Fakkan, or Sohar. A few ships have obtained negotiated safe passage, including some Indian LPG carriers, with nations such as China, Greece, India, Pakistan, and Turkey navigating the risk environment as sporadic attacks continue. The disruption underscores volatility in energy markets and global shipping logistics.
