Canada's Land Border Closure Fails to Deter Refugees
Despite Canada's efforts to deter asylum seekers by closing its land border with the U.S., the number of people filing refugee claims in Canada has actually increased. Many asylum seekers now come by air or sneak across the border and hide until they can apply for asylum without fear of being sent back. The overall number of refugee claims made in Canada rose to 12,010 in July, the highest monthly total since at least January 2017. The influx of asylum seekers highlights the challenges countries face in shutting their doors to desperate people seeking protection.
