Recent progress in reducing opioid overdose deaths in Appalachia, driven by treatment and harm reduction programs, faces potential setbacks due to proposed federal and state funding cuts by the White House and Republicans, which could undermine ongoing efforts and reverse gains in combating the epidemic.
A pair of ultra-rare Nike Air Jordan 3 sneakers, custom-made by designer Tinker Hatfield for filmmaker Spike Lee, were anonymously donated to the Portland Rescue Mission. Former homeless man and recovering addict James Free discovered the shoes while working at the mission's warehouse. Hatfield authenticated the sneakers, of which only four or five pairs were made, and they are expected to fetch $10,000 to $20,000 at auction. The proceeds will go towards funding recovery programs for the homeless, providing them with a new community and a pathway forward.
