Belarusian dissident journalist Raman Pratasevich, who was sentenced to eight years in prison for organizing unrest and plotting to seize power, has reportedly received a presidential pardon. Pratasevich was arrested in May 2021 after his Ryanair flight was forced to land in Minsk. He ran a Telegram messaging app channel that was widely used by participants in mass protests against the disputed August 2020 election. The protests were the longest and largest demonstration of opposition to authoritarian Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko since he took power in 1994.

Belarusian opposition journalist Raman Pratasevich, who was arrested after his Ryanair flight was forced to land in Belarus in May 2021, has been sentenced to eight years in prison. Pratasevich was charged with over 1,500 crimes including organizing unrest and plotting to seize power. The incident sparked international outrage and further stoked tensions with the EU. Two others involved in the Nexta Telegram channel, Stepan Putilo and Yan Rudnik, were also sentenced to 20 and 19 years in prison respectively.

Belarusian journalist Raman Pratasevich sentenced to 8 years in jail after forced plane landing.

Belarusian journalist Raman Pratasevich, who was arrested after his commercial flight was diverted to Belarus in May 2021, has been sentenced to eight years in prison. Pratasevich, who ran the opposition Telegram channel Nexta, was charged with organising unrest and plotting to seize power. His girlfriend, Sofia Sapega, was also arrested and sentenced to six years in prison earlier this year. The forced diversion of the Ryanair jet sparked outrage in the west, with several countries imposing sanctions on Belarus. Opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called the sentences a "disregard for justice".
