Hate Crimes and Threats Plague Oakland School Community

Chabot Elementary in Oakland, California, was evacuated after receiving a bomb threat containing racist undertones. The threat, which targeted the school's principal and another staff member, was emailed before the start of school. The incident follows a series of inflammatory social media posts and hateful emails that occurred after the school organized a playdate for BIPOC families. The school district is taking the incident seriously and has involved the FBI in the investigation. Chabot Elementary will reopen on Wednesday after police and K-9 dogs swept the campus. The community is on alert, and the Mayor's Office has committed to maintaining a police presence near the school for the rest of the week.

The new firm will be led by Melissa Daugherty and Joe Lordan, and is composed of 60% female attorneys. While all lawyers who moved from Lewis Brisbois to Barber Ranen are still at the new firm, about a dozen are in talks with the firm they left not long ago, in the hopes of returning to their former jobs.

LA Lawyers' Racist and Sexist Emails Exposed

The name partners of Barber Ranen, John Barber and Jeffrey Ranen, have resigned after their former law firm, Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith, found dozens of emails that showed the lawyers using racist, sexist, homophobic, and antisemitic language while they were there. The two men co-founded Barber Ranen, which launched last month with more than 100 lawyers from Lewis Brisbois. The emails contained offensive language, including racial, sexist, and homophobic slurs. Barber Ranen will form a new firm, and Lewis Brisbois is conducting a full review of Barber and Ranen's correspondence and interviewing other employees.
