Russia's Desperate Move: Pulling Out Cold War-Era Tanks Amid Weapon Shortage in Ukraine War
Ex-Polish PT-91 Twardy tanks have arrived in Ukraine, which are better than Russia's own replacement tanks. The PT-91 is a modified version of the Soviet T-72M1, with a better engine, fire-controls, optics, and reactive armor. Ukraine is acquiring replacement tanks from foreign allies, while Russia is restoring Cold War-vintage vehicles. The PT-91s could soon outnumber Ukraine's battle-ready Western tanks and could be the most numerous of the Ukrainian army's replacement tanks if they go on the counteroffensive.
