Former Separatist Ukraine Commander Igor Girkin Arrested in Russia
Former separatist Ukraine commander Igor Girkin, who helped Moscow annex Crimea in 2014 and organized pro-Russian militias in eastern Ukraine, has been detained in Russia. Girkin's wife stated that he has been accused of violating Russia's Criminal Code by inciting hatred and humiliation of human dignity. The arrest comes after Girkin called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to step down. Political experts suggest that the arrest serves the interests of Russia's Defense Ministry, and it may serve as a cautionary tale for other dissenters. Girkin was previously sentenced to life in prison in absentia for the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in 2014.
