Prince Harry's Lawsuit Against The Sun Tabloid Heads to Trial

Prince Harry's lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch's British newspaper group, News Group Newspapers (NGN), can proceed to trial, except for the allegations of phone-hacking, which were deemed to be outside the time limit for legal action. Harry is suing NGN over multiple alleged unlawful acts carried out by its tabloids, the Sun and the now-defunct News of the World. The prince claims there was a "secret agreement" between Buckingham Palace and NGN to avoid embarrassment, a claim denied by NGN. This is one of four cases Harry is pursuing against British publishers to hold tabloid executives accountable for lying and covering up wrongdoing. The trial is set to begin in January 2022.

Prince Harry Testifies in Phone-Hacking Trial, Misses First Day Due to Daughter's Birthday

Prince Harry testified in court against the publisher of the British tabloid, The Daily Mirror, accusing them of phone hacking and other unlawful snooping. He described the toll press intrusion had on him and his relationships, saying news stories "played a destructive role" as he grew up. He also claimed that some editors and journalists had inadvertently caused death, a veiled reference to the 1997 paparazzi car chase that led to the car crash that killed his mother, Princess Diana, in Paris. Harry is one of a number of claimants suing the Mirror's publishers, the Mirror Group, for using what they say were unlawful methods to obtain stories, including phone hacking.

The Truth Behind Prince Harry and Meghan's Paparazzi Chase Drama

The couple were followed by photographers in half a dozen vehicles with blacked-out windows, on scooters and bikes, with several close calls but no accidents. The Duke of Sussex has been a vocal critic of press intrusion into his family's lives, and lost his mother Princess Diana after a high-speed pursuit in Paris in 1997.
