Scott Dixon crashed during the opening St. Pete practice while on fresh soft Firestone red-sidewall tires, sliding into the Turn 9 outside wall. He was uninjured, but the impact damaged the nose and left-front suspension; a red flag ended the session. Team Penske said Dixon is not expected to need a backup car, and teammate David Malukas narrowly avoided the crash.

"Pagenaud's Terrifying Crash Shakes Up IndyCar Mid-Ohio Qualifying"

Simon Pagenaud will miss qualifying for the NTT IndyCar Series race at Mid-Ohio after a massive practice crash caused by a suspected brake failure. Although he was quickly checked and released by the medical team, Pagenaud has not been cleared to return to racing. A further evaluation will determine his participation in the rest of the weekend. Pagenaud, a previous winner at Mid-Ohio, will be re-evaluated on Sunday morning.
