"Michelle O'Neill Takes the Lead in Northern Ireland's Government Funding Priorities"

Northern Ireland's new first minister, Michelle O'Neill, has identified funding as the top priority for the Stormont Executive, emphasizing the need for a better funding model from Westminster to address underfunding of public services. The UK government has offered a £3.3bn funding package, including funds for public sector pay claims and public service stabilization, but with conditions for additional revenue raising. O'Neill also expressed a commitment to addressing urgent issues such as affordable childcare, housing, and job creation, while the new Health Minister, Robin Swann, aims to resolve current industrial disputes in the health service. O'Neill believes a united Ireland could be achieved within the next decade and maintains that pursuing constitutional change can coexist with power sharing, emphasizing the importance of the people's decision as outlined in the Good Friday Agreement.

"Northern Ireland's Power-Sharing Set to Resume After Two-Year Hiatus"

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in Northern Ireland has reached a deal with the UK government to end its two-year boycott and resume power-sharing, potentially seeing Sinn Féin nominate the first minister for the first time. The hiatus was due to the DUP's protest against post-Brexit trade rules, which they claimed created a trade barrier between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. The deal includes measures to safeguard Northern Ireland's place in the UK, remove checks for goods, and ensure unfettered access for Northern Ireland businesses to the UK. The return of power-sharing has been welcomed by various political figures, including the US Ambassador to Ireland.

Biden promotes economic opportunity and peace in Northern Ireland.

US President Joe Biden urged Northern Irish political leaders to restore their powersharing government, promising that scores of major US corporations were ready to invest in the region as he marked the 25th anniversary of peace in Belfast. Biden said powersharing remained critical to the future of Northern Ireland and that an effective devolved government would "draw even greater opportunity in this region". The 1998 peace accord was backed by the US and largely ended 30 years of bloodshed between mainly Catholic nationalist opponents and mainly Protestant unionist supporters of British rule.
