"UK Abolishes Bankers' Bonus Cap, Sparks Controversy"

Britain has scrapped a decade-old cap on banker bonuses inherited from the European Union, signaling a divergence in post-Brexit financial rules. The cap, introduced in 2014 to prevent behavior that led to the 2008 financial crisis, has been criticized for leading to higher fixed salaries. The Bank of England and Financial Conduct Authority proposed scrapping the cap earlier this year, and its abolition was confirmed in final policy published on Tuesday. The change will enter into force from October 31, earlier than the original proposed start date of 2024. The decision has drawn criticism from labor unions, while law firm Linklaters stated that it aligns Britain with the rest of the world, except the EU.

"Microsoft's Gaming Deal Raises Doubts on UK's Post-Brexit Direction"

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has maintained its decision to block Microsoft's $69 billion bid to acquire Activision Blizzard, but will consider a separate restructured deal proposed by Microsoft. The new proposal involves Activision divesting its cloud streaming rights to Ubisoft Entertainment, excluding the European Union. The CMA's objection to the deal reflects its tough stance on big technology companies, and the outcome raises doubts about the CMA's power to block megadeals that are not in line with other major jurisdictions. The CMA will review the new proposal and make an announcement by October 18.

UK on track to join Pacific trade pact.

Britain is expected to soon reach a broad agreement with the 11 members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which includes Japan and Australia, as it seeks to join the trade pact as part of its post-Brexit pivot towards geographically distant but fast-growing economies, especially in the Indo-Pacific. The aim is to further cut tariffs on goods and reduce barriers to services and digital trade. Discussions are set to be held later this week, with an update expected at the "earliest possible opportunity".
