Google has introduced a Material 3 Expressive redesign for Pixel Recorder, simplifying the interface with new layout changes, larger controls, and a streamlined menu, aiming to enhance user experience as part of broader Material 3 updates across Google apps.
The latest update to Pixel Recorder introduces a new feature called "Transcribe again" that allows users to obtain transcripts in languages not currently supported by the Live Transcription feature. By uploading audio recordings to Google's servers, users can receive transcriptions in various languages. The update also includes other features such as favorite/star recordings, audio channel selection, and language detection for speaker labels.
Google has found that the majority of Pixel Recorder sessions are three minutes or less, with users using the app for short memos, such as brainstorming rap lyrics or doing voiceovers. This is in contrast to iOS's Voice Memos app, which more accurately reflects the short-form nature of how people use the app. The Pixel Essential Apps team responsible for Recorder, Google Clock, and Calculator takes into account user feedback to balance what users are requesting with an overall vision of the next phase of audio technology. Recently, Google introduced Speaker Labels, which doubles down on the long-form use case.
