"Report Reveals Over 200 Charged Under Outdated Ohio HIV Laws"

At least 214 Ohioans were charged under state laws criminalizing HIV from 2014 to 2020, with the majority facing prosecution for failing to disclose their HIV status to sexual partners. The laws, which have not been reviewed since the 1990s, are considered outdated and do not reflect current scientific understanding of HIV transmission. The report highlights uneven enforcement across counties and a significant racial disparity, with Black defendants accounting for over 35% of those prosecuted. Advocacy groups are calling for legislative reform to modernize these laws and ensure fair treatment of HIV-positive individuals.

Border Crisis Continues as Migrant Crossings Reach Record Highs.

Outdated immigration laws, partisan gridlock, and conflict abroad are some reasons behind the strained U.S. border with Mexico. The facilities built on the border were originally designed to hold Mexican men who crossed illegally in search of work. Enforcement measures at the border were largely devised for migrants who were trying to evade being caught by the authorities, not for thousands of people fleeing humanitarian crises who turn themselves in to the authorities once they reach the border, many hoping to seek asylum. The federal government also does not have a plan to safely transport released migrants to other U.S. cities or offer enough support to local governments, which help the migrants once they are there.
