Amedisys has agreed to be acquired by UnitedHealth Group for $3.1 billion, while scrapping its merger with Option Care Health. The deal will expand UnitedHealth's home health-care business and give Amedisys access to UnitedHealth's vast network of patients.
UnitedHealth Group has agreed to acquire home health and hospice caregiver Amedisys for $3.3bn in cash, a dollar higher than its previous offer and above the $97.38 per share all-stock deal with Option Care Health in May. The acquisition will expand UnitedHealth's presence in home healthcare, a business it bolstered this year through a $5.4bn deal to buy Amedisys' rival, LHC Group. However, UnitedHealth's presence in the segment through the LHC acquisition has stoked some anti-trust concerns about the deal for Amedisys.
Home health and hospice company Amedisys has received a competing all-cash buyout offer from Optum, a diversified health services company, while still under a pending merger agreement with Option Care Health. The unsolicited offer from Optum would be worth $100 per share in cash, compared to the $97.38 per share in all-stock deal with Option Care Health. Amedisys' share price spiked 15.5% premarket following the news.
