Researchers from Osaka University have developed an optical device made of aluminum nitride that can generate deep-UV light using a process called "second harmonic generation." By merging two visible photons into a single deep-UV photon, the device can effectively kill pathogens on surfaces while remaining safe for humans. The device's narrow wavelength range ensures germ-killing efficacy while minimizing harm to human cells. The researchers aim to refine the method for commercial production of energy-efficient deep-UV disinfection tools.
