Hostages Freed in West Africa After Years in Captivity

French journalist Olivier Dubois, who was held hostage in the Sahel for nearly two years, has returned to France and was greeted by his family and President Emmanuel Macron. Dubois and US aid worker Jeffery Woodke were freed and arrived in the Niger capital, Niamey, on Monday. US aid worker Jeffery Woodke and French journalist Olivier Dubois, who were kidnapped by militants in West Africa, have been released and arrived at an airport in Niger's capital, Niamey. Their release was secured following efforts by authorities in Niger. Mr Woodke went missing in Niger in 2016, while Mr Dubois was held hostage in neighbouring Mali for nearly two years. French journalist Olivier Dubois, who was abducted by the al Qaeda-linked Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM) in Mali in April 2021, has been released and taken to neighbouring Niger. Dubois was held captive for almost two years and was the last French hostage in captivity. His release came as US hostage Jeff Woodke was also freed after more than six years in captivity in Africa. No ransom was paid for Woodke's release, according to a senior US official.
