The FDA has approved a new nonhormonal medication, fezolinetant, to treat hot flashes and night sweats caused by menopause. The medication, marketed as Veozah, will be a game-changer for women who cannot or do not want to take hormone replacement therapy, such as breast cancer survivors. While not as effective as estrogen or estrogen coupled with progestin, the medication will provide relief for moderate to severe hot flashes. The medication works by targeting and blocking a receptor in the brain that regulates body temperature. A 30-day supply is expected to cost $550.
