A photograph taken during a 2009 expedition near Nikumaroro Island in the Pacific Ocean appears to show an engine cover buried underwater that could potentially be part of Amelia Earhart's plane, which disappeared in 1937. The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) is currently analyzing the photo to determine if it is indeed from Earhart's twin-engined Lockheed Model 10E Special Electra. If confirmed, it would challenge the theory that Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan landed on Nikumaroro and died there. Previous expeditions have failed to find concrete evidence of the plane's whereabouts.
