Siberian maternity hospital: two senior doctors detained as nine newborns die
In Novokuznetsk’s No. 1 Maternity Hospital, nine newborns died between Jan 1–12 during the New Year holiday. Two senior doctors—the chief physician and the head of the intensive care unit—have been detained for alleged improper performance of duties in organizing and delivering care. The Investigative Committee says they are cooperating as nine post-mortems are carried out; authorities have not yet stated charges. The hospital has stopped accepting new patients amid a spike in respiratory infections, and investigators have questioned victims and witnesses as they gather evidence.
