Former New Mexico State Basketball Players Indicted on Felony Sex Charges in Hazing Scandal
Three former New Mexico State basketball players have been criminally charged with sexual assault after allegations of abuse by their teammates surfaced last year. The charges include criminal sexual penetration, false imprisonment, criminal sexual contact, and conspiracy. The indictment documents provide limited details about the incidents, which occurred between August and November 2022. The university canceled the remainder of its 2022-23 men's basketball season and fired the basketball coach in response to the allegations. The players settled a previous lawsuit for $8 million, and they are now named as co-defendants in a second lawsuit filed by two other former players. Concerns about student safety have been raised following a fatal shooting involving a former New Mexico State basketball player.
