Families allege authorities extort payments to reclaim protest victims’ bodies in Iran
Families of those killed in Iran’s protests say security forces are withholding bodies in mortuaries and hospitals unless relatives pay large sums, with reported demands ranging from about 700 million tomans ($5,000) to 1 billion tomans ($7,000). Amid a deadly crackdown and internet blackouts, the reported extortion comes as authorities contend with thousands of arrests and at least 2,435 deaths across the country.
