The Montana Grizzlies will face off against the Furman Paladins in the quarterfinals of the Division 1 FCS playoffs tonight. The Montana Grizzlies enter the FCS playoffs as the No. 2 seed and with the No. 2 ranking in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll, their highest ranking since 2010. If they continue to win, both teams are guaranteed home games through the semifinals, with the championship game scheduled for January 7.
Clifton McDowell, the senior quarterback for the No. 13 Montana Grizzlies, showcased his passing skills in his first career start, completing 7 of 10 pass attempts for 94 yards and leading the team to a 43-13 victory over Utah Tech. McDowell also displayed his athleticism with some rushing yards, while running back Ostmo had an impressive performance with 118 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The Grizzlies' offense capitalized on turnovers, converting them into 21 points, and their special teams contributed with a punt return touchdown. The game was well in hand, allowing sophomore quarterback Sam Vidlak to get some playing time.
The New Orleans Saints have signed undrafted free agent Malik Flowers, a wide receiver and returns specialist out of Montana. Flowers returned 92 kickoffs for 2,659 yards and scored 7 touchdowns in the return game during his college career. He will need to work on his punt returns to make an impact with the Saints. Flowers caught 31 receptions for 460 yards and 2 touchdowns in 2022, setting career highs as a receiver. With an opportunity to make the cut as a returns specialist, Flowers will showcase his skills at rookie minicamps.
