"Governor: Numerous Children Among 850 Missing in Devastating Maui Wildfires"
Hawaii Governor Josh Green stated that children are likely among the 850 residents still missing in the aftermath of the Maui wildfires, with over 100 residents confirmed dead. Many of the missing children may have been at home due to school closures when the fires occurred. Maui Mayor Richard Bissen reported a decrease in the number of missing individuals from the initial 2,000, with 27 of the 114 confirmed deceased victims identified. Governor Green assured that resources are in place to help families and that children who survived will be returning to school soon. President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visited Maui to meet with first responders and announced the appointment of a federal coordinator for long-term recovery efforts.
