Rising Illegal Child Labor and Congressional Responsibility for Migrant Children
The Labor Department has reported a 44% increase in the number of children found to be employed illegally, while Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra faced criticism from Congress over reports of migrant minors working dangerous jobs. Becerra acknowledged the reports of child labor but stated that once children are placed with a sponsor, the agency's responsibility ends. Meanwhile, the Labor Department touted its efforts to crack down on child labor, with over 4,400 children found employed in violation of child labor laws since October. However, critics argue that the low fines for hiring underage workers do not deter employers. The department is investigating possible child labor violations at a Mississippi poultry plant where a 16-year-old Guatemalan died while cleaning equipment.
