Severe weather conditions led to full ground stops at Chicago's O'Hare and Midway airports, causing gate hold and taxi delays of up to 30 minutes, as well as airborne delays of 15 minutes or less for arrival traffic. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported 18 cancellations at O'Hare and 16 at Midway.

A man from Berkeley, Illinois was arrested for allegedly flashing a laser pointer at several planes leaving Midway and O'Hare airports. The Illinois State Police used an aircraft camera to determine the laser pointer was coming from the man's yard. The man was charged with two counts of disorderly conduct.
Midway Airport in Chicago was saved from extinction in the 1960s and '70s by Midway Airlines, which employed a daring formula of secondhand aircraft and discounted fares. The airport's decline had a contagious effect on neighbors, and Midway Airlines' success precipitated its downfall as other carriers mimicked its cut-rate model. In 1990, Midway lost $139 million and declared bankruptcy in March 1991. Acquisition by another carrier seemed the only way out of its death spiral, but the deal with Northwest fell through, and Midway Airlines shut down on Nov. 13, 1991.
