Lagos Metro Rail Launches, Promising Relief from Traffic Woes
The long-awaited metro rail service in Lagos, Nigeria has finally begun operations, aiming to ease traffic congestion and reduce travel times in the bustling commercial hub. The 13km-long first phase, which connects the mainland with Lagos Island, carried its first passengers after decades of delays. The electric-powered service is expected to significantly reduce travel times, with a journey that once took over two hours now taking just 15 minutes. Construction of the second phase is set to begin later this year, with the metro projected to transport around 500,000 passengers daily upon completion.
