"Texas Schools Face New Security and Content Regulations"

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a new law mandating all public schools to have at least one armed security officer or armed school personnel at each public school campus statewide. The law will also allot $330 million to build security centers on campuses, mandate annual audits of school protocol, and require staff members to get mental health training. Some people believe adding armed personnel to campuses would increase protection, while others disagree and worry about the burden of funding an additional salary falling on schools and local taxpayers.

Colorado police to pay record settlement to Christian Glass family.

The family of Christian Glass, who was shot and killed by a Clear Creek County sheriff’s deputy last summer, will receive a $19 million settlement, the largest known law enforcement settlement in Colorado history. The settlement includes police reform and mental health training initiatives, a public park dedicated to Glass, and a virtual reality training program reflecting Glass’s death. The law enforcement agencies involved have also issued rare apologies for initially misleading the public about what happened. Two officers have been indicted and fired, and their trials could be held later this year.

Texas Considers Paying Teachers $25K to Carry Guns in Schools

Texas lawmakers are considering a bill that would pay teachers or other school staff up to $25,000 to carry firearms and act as "sentinels" in public and open-enrollment charter schools. The proposal, which requires firearms and mental health training, was written in response to a deadly mass shooting at a Uvalde elementary school last year. Opponents of the bill claim it would force educators to carry weapons just to boost their paychecks. The bill has passed the state House but faces an uphill battle in the Senate.
