Mission Hospital's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Anthony Spensieri, has announced his retirement amid patient care concerns and the hospital's recent "immediate jeopardy" status from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. A report revealed patient safety issues, including a patient death in a hallway, prompting CMS to assign the status and putting the health system at risk of losing Medicare funding. Mission Health says it's pleased CMS accepted its Plan of Correction and has begun implementing changes to ensure the hospital successfully serves the needs of the Western North Carolina community.
