American doctor Bushra Ibnauf Sulieman, who divided his time between Iowa City and Khartoum, was killed in front of his family by robbers in Khartoum, Sudan, amid violence in the country's capital. Sulieman had been treating the city's wounded for days after battles between two rival Sudanese commanders erupted in Khartoum. He directed the medical faculty at the University of Khartoum and was a founder and director of a doctors' humanitarian group, the Sudanese American Medical Association. Sulieman was one of two Americans confirmed killed in Sudan in the fighting, both dual nationals.
