Disney and Charter have reached an agreement to end their carriage dispute, with Charter offering select Disney streaming services as part of its cable packages at no additional cost to consumers. Analysts see this deal as a win-win for both companies and a step towards a fully streaming future. Charter's focus on offering more bundles and Disney's plans to take ESPN fully over the top as a direct-to-consumer streaming service were incentives for the agreement. Disney stands to gain additional revenue of about $400 million to $500 million annually, assuming the addition of roughly 12 million subscribers through Charter. However, Disney did give up several networks in exchange for strong rate increases for ESPN.

Hollywood Unions Negotiate New Contracts Amid Media Blackout and Potential Strike.

SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP have agreed to a media blackout during their negotiations for a new contract, which began on Wednesday. SAG-AFTRA is seeking robust regulations on artificial intelligence, a better streaming residual formula, and restrictions on self-taped auditions, among other items. The contract expires on June 30, and SAG-AFTRA members have approved a strike authorization if talks break down. The DGA reached a tentative agreement, which includes an increase in foreign streaming residuals and language protecting members from AI.

DGA and AMPTP vow media silence during contract talks.

The Directors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have begun formal negotiations for the 2023 Agreement, with a media blackout in place. The DGA's priorities include securing wage increases, maintaining pension and health care plans, improving streaming residual formulas, protecting directors' roles and vision, increasing diversity and inclusion, and looking out for the full directorial team. The DGA hasn't gone on strike since 1987, and their current contract with the AMPTP expires on June 30.
