Boxing Champion Alycia Baumgardner Fails Drug Test, Reign in Jeopardy

Undisputed junior lightweight champion Alycia Baumgardner tested positive for two banned substances in a voluntary anti-doping test before her July 15 fight against Christina Linardatou. Baumgardner denies ever using the substances and claims the positive result was contrary to her training ethics. Matchroom Boxing will assist in the investigation, and the WBC will launch its own investigation. Linardatou's promoter hopes for a no-contest and another opportunity for Linardatou to regain a title she lost due to pregnancy. This is the second Matchroom fighter to test positive this month, following Dillian Whyte.

Berlanga dominates Quigley with four knockdowns in return to the ring.

Edgar Berlanga defeats Jason Quigley in a unanimous decision in his return to the ring after a yearlong layoff. Berlanga, who was a reliable draw for Top Rank with his initial 16 fights ending in first-round stoppages, recorded his first knockdowns since his stoppage streak ended. Berlanga is hoping for a big fight before the end of the year and wants to prove that he belongs in the same conversation as the best super middleweights in the world.

Edgar Berlanga defeated Jason Quigley in a unanimous decision victory in their super middleweight bout at Madison Square Garden's Hulu Theater in New York City. Berlanga dropped Quigley four times but was unable to secure a knockout. This was Berlanga's first fight in over a year, and he outperformed Quigley in every statistical punch category. Berlanga signed with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing after parting ways with Top Rank earlier this year. A step up in class is expected for Berlanga's next outing.

Cuban Boxer Andy Cruz Goes Pro in the US

Cuban boxer Andy Cruz, who won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, has arrived in Philadelphia to learn how to box like a pro. He will make his professional debut in Detroit on July 15, in a 10-round bout against Juan Carlos Burgos. Cruz is one of the most accomplished fighters ever to emerge from Cuba’s celebrated boxing program, with three amateur world titles and twice winning at the Pan American Games. He signed a three-year deal with Matchroom Boxing that will guarantee him payment in the seven figures, and his backers think he will dominate the talent-rich lightweight division by next summer.
