Two more horses died at Belmont Park over the weekend, marking the fifth and sixth fatalities at the track since May 4. A 5-year old mare named Mashnee Girl had to be euthanized at Belmont Park after suffering an injury during a race, marking the second horse death in 24 hours at the track. Both horses were trained by Mark Hennig. Horse deaths resulting from injuries sustained on prominent tracks have cast a pall over the sport, with four deaths at Belmont Park in 2021 and 12 at Churchill Downs during a stretch of several weeks.
