Trainer Demands Answers as Two Horses Die at Belmont Park.
Trainer Mark A. Hennig is "heartbroken" and "devastated" after two of his horses, Mashnee Girl and Excursionniste, died at Belmont Park less than 24 hours apart. Four horses have died while racing or training at the New York track since May 13. The New York Racing Association is investigating the injuries and has said that all three racing surfaces are consistent throughout with no anomalies. The deaths follow a series of unexpected deaths at prestigious racetracks, including Churchill Downs, which has suspended racing operations to conduct a review of all safety and surface protocols following the deaths of 12 horses at the racetrack.
